Opera
lovers always have wished to experience a performance of Turandot
in its original setting, where the genius of Puccini placed his
masterwork. For years I have dreamed of conducting such an event.
Now this dream comes true. Having been chosen and invited by the
government of the People's Republic of China to realize this authentic
performance together with the orchestra of the Maggio Musicale
Fiorentino is the highest honor and recognition. For the first
time ever will a "foreign" theater in Beijing perform the "Chinese"
opera Turandot - providing a spectacular occasion for the
stage debut of a great Chinese film director. |

I
just cannot imagine what that most exciting moment will be like,
when the falling darkness of the Forbidden City, which was built
in 1406, lightens up with the lights of 1998 and the old palaces
come alive with the sound of the first beautifull melody. Like
everyone, I am looking forward to the coming of that moment. |
