ORCHESTRA
AND CHORUS OF THE MAGGIO MUSICALE FIORENTINO
Zubin
Mehta refers to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as "...
one of my favorite opera companies." His close bond with the
ensemble was reflected in his spontaneous reaction following the terrorist
attack on the Uffizi galleries in 1993: He organized a free concert
for the people of Florence at the Piazza della Signoria.
Since
then it has become traditional for Maestro Mehta to give an open air
concert with the Maggio Musicale towards the end of June. Some 30.000
listeners gather - both locals and tourists - to enjoy this special
event.
Maestro
Mehta is the Chief Conductor of the 120-member orchestra since 1985.
He is responsible for numerous successful projects, many of which are
documented on recordings by EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, and more
recently, Sony and Philips.
The
Orchestra has also received a Grammy award for Video and CD for their
participation in the "Three Tenors Concert" ("Concerto Dei Tre Tenori")
in which José Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti
joined forces with Zubin Mehta at the historic Baths of Caracalla in
Rome.
The
Florence Opera/Maggio Musicale enjoy performing at special venues and
under unusual conditions. Its documented success to date in this area
makes it an ideal choice for this unique Turandot production
at the Forbidden City.
The
Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - the most important music festival in
Italy and one of the highest international ranking - takes place during
the months of May and June. The Orchestra, Chorus, and Ballet belong
to the Florence Theatre where they perform all year long Operatic, Symphonic
and Dance Seasons.
